Joy
Stokes
Joy Stokes focuses her paintings on the people and places she sees while traveling.
During the summer months, Joy leads Lets Paint Runaways workshops and 4-H painting classes throughout the country. She teaches art
classes in the school systems in Georgia and South Carolina in the winter months. Joy is
also a certified instructor for Genesis Artist Colors, the new heat-set
artist oil paints.
Joy began painting seriously when she was 28, after a medical problem resulted in the
loss of part of her left arm. She attended John Herron Art School in Indianapolis, and has
gained insight from nationally known artists such as Dorothy Dent, Priscilla Hauser, Betty
Denton and Susan Scheewe. She has also taught with Bob Ross and Brenda Harris.
Born in a small town in northern Indiana, Joy's enthusiasm and love of life is
transferred to her students. She enjoys teaching artists of all ages, grade
school through
adult. "I especially love to teach kids," says Joy, "because you open up a
whole world they've never tried before. My motto is that the talent you possess is God's
gift to you. What you do with that talent is your gift to God."
"Joy Stokes shows kids how to bring out their own creativity and
be proud of it! She shows them step-by-step what they will be doing when they paint
because she does it first by example. Kids like Joy---she talks one-on-one to them,
helping them feel successful at freehand artwork that would likely scare them otherwise.
We are looking forward to Joy returning for more 4-H sessions!"
